Overview

Science is the research which improves the rate of a player's development and fighting ability. There are six sciences in total, plus culture which limits the number of planets a player may colonise. A player may only research one science at a time, and each gives different benefits which are described below. The rate of research per hour depends on the number of Research Labs the player owns. Culture is researched continually throughout the game, independently of the sciences, and its rate is determined by how many Galactic Cybernets the player has.

Overview Screen

This screen shows the level each science has reached on the left, while the red bar displays its progress towards the next level. The science currently being researched is highlighted in green. The figures on the right are the number of research units still needed to reach the next level, and the time needed to achieve this. The value on the top bar shows how many research units per hour the player can produce, followed by any bonus or malus awarded, which is influenced by any science bonus or malus selected in the player's race, plus any bonus from using certain Artifacts, plus bonuses from Player Level and Trade Agreements. Culture is displayed and works in the same way, but it is influenced by different artifacts, by a different race option, by Trade Agreements, but is not influenced at all by Player Level.

Change Science

It is important to research science in all areas so development is balanced. Sciences are selected using the Change science screen, and can be switched at any time and as often as a player wishes. There is no need to complete a level before changing to a different science, but only one science may be researched at a time.

Sciences

Each science develops a different attribute as described below:

Biology

Biology allows a player to see more of the star map, and therfore makes other star systems visible. The map view expands at the rate of one square in each direction from a player's home system for every two levels of Biology. A player may only attack and colonise planets in systems which are visible on the map. Note: this rule only applies until the player reaches Bio level 25, at which level ships can travel to any system in the game by entering the System ID in the launch page of the Fleet Screen instead of selecting a system name in the list.

Economy

Economy reduces the cost of war ships, and occurs at the rate of 1 point reduction at certain levels of Economy (but not at every level). Study the Development Tables to see the levels at which these reductions are applied.

Energy

Energy determines the speed at which a fleet travels, for each new level the travel time is reduced by 9% of the previous level's travel time for the same journey. Again, the Development Tables show how this reduction affects travel times.

Mathematics

Mathematics increases the winner's survival rate after a battle. The higher this level is, the less ships a player will lose if he/she wins the battle. If a player has 6 levels of Maths more than the enemy he/she also gets a 25% bonus added to the survival rate, in addition to any applicable increase or reduction due because of a bonus or malus in defence selected in the player's Race. Note: beginning in the Gold Edition, if a player uses a fleet comprising all three war ship types (Destroyer + Cruiser + Battleship), they will also receive an additional 1% defence bonus for every Player Level they are above that of their opponent.

Physics

Physics is the % chance of winning a battle; before the survival rate given by the Maths level is any use, a player must first win the battle. Explore the Battle Calculator under the News Screen/Help link to see how this is used. If a player has 6 levels of Physics more than the enemy he/she gets a 25% bonus added to the chance to win, in addition to any increase or reduction due because of a bonus or malus in attack selected in the player's Race. Note: if a player's fleet comprises all three of the war ship types (Destroyer + Cruiser + Battleship), they also receive an extra 1% attack bonus for each Player Level they are above that of their opponent.

Social

Social determines the maximum population which can be developed on any planet. Population can grow to a maximum of 5 without any Social levels, then for each two Social levels up to Social level 10 this maximum increases by +1 population, and from level 10 upwards another +1 population is possible for every new level of Social reached.

Culture

Culture represents the maximum number of planets a player can own at any one time. Note: as a new level of culture is reached, it must be confirmed by logging in afterwards so it is updated in the player's game stats.
